Delivering Long‑Term Benefits for the Texas Gulf
The HI-54 Deep Artificial Reef Project reached a major milestone this summer as years of planning and coordination resulted in the successful creation of one of the largest artificial reefs along the Gulf Coast of Texas. The completed 160‑acre reef site now features a diverse marine habitat expected to flourish for generations, supporting healthy ecosystems and expanding recreational fishing opportunities for local residents.
Port Arthur LNG, alongside industry partners including our engineering, procurement and construction contractor Bechtel, contributed materials and funding that helped bring the reef structure to life. The restoration effort included 300 pyramids, 102 cement culverts, 400 tons of cement railroad ties, 100 low‑relief habitat plates, 17 quarry rocks and numerous cement piling cut‑offs. Clean, unused concrete culverts staged at the Port Arthur LNG project site were also repurposed for the build, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable practices and responsible material management.
Jim Thompson, permitting and compliance manager for Sempra Infrastructure, highlighted the strength of the partnership and the long‑term value it brings to the marine ecosystem. “This project reflects what can be accomplished when industry and conservation partners work together with a shared purpose. We were proud to support a habitat that will strengthen biodiversity and benefit the marine ecosystem for years to come.”
A Partnership Supporting Long‑Term Stewardship
Port Arthur LNG supported the project through a $125,000 partnership investment aligned with our climate action and biodiversity priority. This funding enabled the purchase and deployment of additional reef pyramids and supported the transportation and placement of materials at the reef site. The deployment phase has now been completed, marking a significant step forward in long‑term marine habitat restoration.
The HI-54 Deep Reef represents the third artificial reef developed through the partnership between Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Coastal Conservation Association Texas, Friends of Sabine Reefs and industry partners. This collaboration continues to demonstrate how group efforts can work together to create larger habitat impact that strengthens marine ecosystems and expands recreational fishing access.
